Peak breeding times for rats is February - March. Gestation is about 21-23 days. Young are weaned at about 3 weeks. They can begin breeding after 3 months. She is in heat again within 24 hours after birth. The average female can have four to six litters per year. Rats can between 12 - 18 months, but most die before they are one year old.

What kind of rodent do I have?

Getting rid of them

Keep garbage can lids tightly closed at all times. When planting bushes, shrubs be sure to plant them at least 24-36 feet from the building. Never feed them. Be careful of bird seed, bird feeders, fruits and vegetables around your lawn or garden. Always use strong containers for storing food or other consumables. Rats will chew them.
