    Moles in yard       Mole Tunnel

  ground Mole damage to yard

Small, thick bodied creatures with narrow, pointed noses. Moles have broad front feet, the toes of which terminate in stout claws faced outward for digging. Their thick, plush like fur varies from gray to black and often has a pronounced sheen. Unlike the fur of most mammals. Mole hair can move in any direction without standing on end. An adaption that allows them to move in either direction in their tunnels with relative ease. Their ears are not visible and the eyes are very small. Moles are rarely seen by humans. They spend most of their life underground. The reason moles can breathe under ground is due to having twice as many white blood cells as other mammals.

There are 7 species of North American moles. Eastern mole, Hairy tailed mole, Star nosed mole, Broad footed mole, Coast mole, Shrew mole, and the most damaging the Townsend's mole. Through out the 17,18,19 centuries mole skins were used for capes, trimmings, tobacco pouches and purses.

 Breeding

Moles breed in late winter or spring and have a gestation period of about four to six weeks. Single annual litters of two - five young are born in March, April or May. Young moles are born hairless and helpless, but growth and development occur rapidly. About four weeks after birth, the moles leave the nest and fend for themselves.

 Food

A four oz. mole will eat 40 pounds of food  per year. They will consume an amount  equal to 49% - 100% of it's body weight per day. They must eat every 3 to 4 hours. Their food source consists of earthworms, snails, slugs, millipedes, centipedes, and soil insects.

 Economic effects of ground mole

Moles create a complex system of interconnected chambers by tunneling. They can swim across rivers or streams or tunnel under roads, beneath, buildings. One male mole can create over 300 holes every 77 days. In just 20 min. A mole can excavate 10 pounds of soil or almost 50 % of it's body weight. This is done using their fore feet much like a bulldozer blade to push the soil to the surface. Which would be like a 200 pound man shoveling 10,000 pounds of soil.

A single mole can dig up to 60 feet of soil a day. or about 18 feet per minute. A mole can run through an established runway at 80 feet per minute.
